This map from the Mountain Area Land Trust represents areas of wildlife concentration on Republican Mountain. The red area depicts the proposed Taylor-Kennedy claims purchase. The areas in blue are of particular concern as they map an important Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep birthing area and an area of summer concentration of Bighorn Sheep.
Other areas of wildlife significance are also presented on the map and reinforce Republican Mountain's importance as wildlife habitat and the need for preservation.
Permanent protection of the property will safeguard a vital Bighorn sheep migration corridor and summer/winter concentration areas, and will buffer summer elk concentration habitat to the north. Protection in birthing seasons will be coordinated with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), which strongly supports this project.
When the Taylor-Kennedy mining claims become part of the Silver Plume Mountain Park (SPMP) at the completion of this acquisition, the sensitive wildlife habitat will be protected in consultation with CPW to make future trail management decisions - especially with the anticipated increase in visitor use - employing measures such as seasonal closures and enforcement plans.
